The word “biomimetics” originates from the Greek words “bios” [life] and “mimesis” [to imitate].

The Evolution of Biomimetic Dentistry

Biomimetic dentistry has developed over several decades through the convergence of adhesive science, advances in restorative materials, and a growing commitment to minimally invasive, biologically respectful treatment.

The foundations of this shift were laid in the 1950s when Dr Michael Buonocore introduced the acid-etch technique, demonstrating that filling materials could achieve strong bonds with enamel. This breakthrough in adhesive dentistry significantly reduced the need for mechanical retention and extensive tooth preparation.

Further advancement came during the 1980s and 1990s, particularly through the work of Dr Takao Fusayama and colleagues at Tokyo Medical and Dental University. These researches were able to identify two different layers of carious dentine that had two different characteristics of dentine adhesion, and were able to predictable bond to dentine using the novel technology of a caries detection dye encouraging selective caries removal and leading to the concept of the peripheral seal zone - now a central tenet of biomimetic restorations.

A major turning point occurred in 2002 with the publication of Bonded Porcelain Restorations in the Anterior Dentition by Dr Pascal Magne and Dr Urs Belser. Their work examined the mechanical behaviour of natural teeth under functional loads and introduced the concept of Immediate Dentine Sealing (IDS), which is now widely used within biomimetic treatment protocols.

Around the same period, clinicians including Dr Simone Deliperi, Dr David Alleman, and Dr Ray Bertolotti further developed adhesive restorative protocols designed to replicate the natural biomechanics of teeth. These techniques addressed issues such as polymerisation stress, reinforcement of weakened cusps, and adhesive strategies that preserve structural integrity and function.

Together, these developments signified a move away from traditional full-coverage crowns and toward restorations that integrate with, rather than replace, the natural tooth structure.

Today, biomimetic dentistry is a well-supported, evidence-based discipline with growing international adoption, offering patients long-lasting, conservative, and biologically sound care.
